We’re taught to overlook the faults and mistakes of others, including those that bring us harm. That, we’re told, is forgiveness. Scripture has a different idea, however. In biblical terms, forgiveness requires the offending party to be genuinely (provably) repentant. But that can leave us emotionally stranded if someone who’s hurt us won’t acknowledge wrongdoing, make amends, or change. This week’s Q: What do we do then? A: we lean on mercy.
