People of the Book: Schisms

As happens in every movement (including early Judaism and Christianity), the absence of Islam’s founder, the Prophet Muhammad, created a leadership vacuum that gave rise to very different ideas about succession and direction. Soon after the Prophet’s death, conflicts resulted into two main schisms. We look at their core doctrines, as well as their historical background, while also examining the Quran’s portrayal of Moses.
