Knowing the final days were upon Him, Jesus was overwhelmed with sorrow and needed to speak to God. He shared this with Peter, James and John, specifically asking them to stay and be observant with Him, for one hour.
One can certainly understand the need for support from family and close friends during such a turbulent time - death was near and it would be a slow and painful execution. So, asking friends to be present during what was figuratively and literally an hour of need makes sense to us.
This occurrence in Jesus’ life has led to many churches providing some form of Vigil during Holy Week. Pilgrim Congregational Church offers such a Vigil, which will take place for 24 hours, from 8 am Holy Saturday to 8 am Resurrection Sunday, April 3 to 4. It is a time of remembrance and anticipation. Above all, it is a blessing to be able to say, “I waited with Jesus, and I await the celebration of His Resurrection.”
Consider being a part of the Pilgrim Vigil, of spending one “creative” hour alone or with someone, and keeping watch with Jesus, who asks only that we be present and observant for a short time. Due to COVID, we will each be conducting our Vigil at home. Please click below to sign up.
