Outside/In: Family of Choice

Scripture says nothing of Jesus’s maternal grandparents and only names his paternal

grandfather. Instead, Luke’s Gospel places Mary with an aunt and uncle—an aging, childless

couple of no social or religious importance—and in the process models what we call “families of

choice.” That’s our focus as we wrap our three-week look at the Nativity’s supporting cast.
