Community Solar is a new opportunity for Illinois individuals and institutions to get their electric energy from renewable energy sources, rather than fossil fuels. Solar companies are beginning to construct large scale solar panel installations that allow their subscribers to use solar energy without needing to install solar panels on their own roofs. Subscribers to Community Solar can even save money on their electric bills. As a final bonus, solar energy companies are planting native plants underneath the solar panels, helping to restore a part of Illinois’ lost prairie and support native bees and butterflies.
