In the early 20th century, profound longing for “more of God” coupled with intense distrust of sociopolitical structures summoned an eclectic group of Christians to a nightly prayer meeting. Strange things happened. Miracles were reported. Odd behaviors broke out. Most shocking—and problematic—was the diverse mix of people. This second Pentecost was so equitable it infuriated nearly everyone, affecting how the movement evolved over the next 100 years.
