Rahab
After highlighting Tamar, the Canaanite woman who uses bold tricks to vindicate herself, Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus calls out Rahab, a second foreign woman who runs a brothel. In the eyes of the biblical writers, she was probably the least likely agent of divine providence. Yet that’s precisely who she is in the story of Israel’s early nationhood. Everything about her defies respectability. But she’s a true heroine worth knowing. (Meet her in Joshua 2.)
