After Jesus is entombed, the Gospels go silent about what happens between sundown Friday and sunup on Sunday. Over time a tradition emerged based on two slivers of scripture in the epistles that seem to suggest Jesus spends his time in the grave releasing (or harrowing) dead souls held captive in hell. What are we to make of this? What can we learn that might help explain how other biblically “creative” ideas might enter the Christian mindset?
