At the very center of Passion week, a woman interrupts an all-male dinner and pours a highly expensive jar of exotic perfume over Jesus’s head. Traditionally, this event is viewed as the trigger for Judas’s betrayal. And Jesus’s response does raise some serious questions. But how the Gospel writers treat the woman and her role in the narrative raises even bigger issues. We’ll look more closely at what’s going on here and what it might mean today.
